Joy on dark, rainy, and cold days

“If you choose to not find joy in the rain, you will have less joy in your life, but the same amount of rain” – well… true, but how am I supposed to enjoy these dark and rainy months with kids in tow?!

Winter weather may not provide instant gratification like a warm and sunny summer day on the beach, but adventuring rain or shine with our children outdoors, teaches them resilience. Stemming from not just accepting some days or times as “bad”, but rather being ready in a variety of conditions and situations. Our happiness shouldn’t depend on things outside of our control.

By stepping out of our temperature-controlled, indoor life in rainy and cold weather, we can experience a little discomfort while having fun, which will give us and our kids the chance to really learn to appreciate the comfort we take for granted. Spending time outdoors has amazing effects on our mental and physical health, it reduces the risk of common infections, nearsightedness, vitamin D efficiency, and obesity as well as lessens symptoms of ADHD, anxiety, and depression.

So now that we know why, read further for how to enjoy outside time in the winter.

Dress for the weather, as comfortable kids lead to happy outdoor adventures.

Plan your outdoor time during daylight, save chores and indoor playdates, classes for the afternoon. If you can’t go outside during daylight, embrace the dark by going on walks around your neighborhood carrying flashlights, lanterns, string lights wrapped around you, or candles. You can install some lights in your backyard to prolong outdoor play, light a winter bonfire, or have an outdoor tea party.

When it looks like it’s pouring down rain on the streets it is usually a comfortable drizzle in the woods under the trees. Fog, water dripping from branches, slugs, puddles, and super squishy mud creates the most exciting wonderland for our little explorers. You could also consider transporting yourselves to a winter wonderland! We are lucky enough to have Snoqualmie Pass close by with snowshoe trails, sledding (not at the resort), downhill & cross country skiing or just enjoying a snowball fight and a yummy meal afterward.

Get your couch ready with a hot beverage, the coziest blankets, and your favorite book for when you return from your adventure. Enjoy telling stories about and bonding over your crazy outdoor adventures.

I have to admit, being your child’s only cheerleader for outdoor play can be tough. Find some like-minded people and figure out how you can get kids back outside in your community. You could start by joining Mama & Me Adventure Club – Maple Valley WA on Facebook. Go online, browse our adventures, RSVP, log off, show up and enjoy.
